The rationale is in my question in elementaryos.org: Pantheon uses Compiz by default, and Metacity if Compiz fails to start. But in my case, I have problems with the graphic card drivers and Compiz freezes. Compiz starts because the system reports that 3d acceleration is available. I can have 3d acceleration only after several workarounds, and it's slow. So users like me must have an option in somewhere to force Pantheon to start Metacity. --gandreoliva
Right. Maybe little <<advanced>> cog on login prompt? ~grzesiek1e5
Hmm, yeah, I recall Ubuntu having something like that. There also was "recovery" option with an xterm-only session --shnatsel
