Reducing The Brightness One Step Below Lowest - Screen Off

Registered by Srihari Jayaram

This was first seen as it was an accidental bug on Freya. Reducing the brightness further after reaching the lowest brightness setting using the function keys on a Dell Vostro 3446 running Freya resulted in the screen switching off. This handy feature is actually very good but soon disappeared with an update. Loki could have this by default allowing the power switch to be used for suspend or power down instead of screen off.

Whiteboard

This was actually a low-level (kernel, I believe?) bug in the Ubuntu stack. The problem with doing screen-off with backlight alone is that it can cause screen burn-in; the pixels are still being drawn, the backlight is just turned all the way down. Instead, proper screen-off after inactivity exists. ~cassidyjames
