Context menus should be popovers

Context menus should look like popovers - they're spawned from a particular place, and it's a good idea for the menu to point to the place to which it belongs.

Could be a GTK patch.
perhaps LD_PRELOAD but it's not preserved and needs to be set specifically for each app, so only for testing
Marking as Superseded. In Gtk 3.12 Gtk.Popover supports a menu-like mode. So if you so desire, you can use popovers instead of menus. --DanRabbit
