File Browsing Plugin

Registered by Daniel Fore on 2009-11-03

Docky could provide via plugin a supplemental file browser that would work in conjunction with the folder Grid View for a complete experience without having to open up a full browser window. Such a browser would include scrolling, basic navigation, and possibly complete common tasks like deleting or renaming a file.

In thinking about how docky could remain simple and yet perform more complex functions, perhaps it would be good to consider going back to an idea for KDE 4's plasma that outlined context badges as opposed to menus. This might work better to keep the interface simple and intuitive while also making it more accessible for touch screens. Here's a link to what the KDE implementation would have looked like: http://commit-digest.org/issues/2007-06-17/files/file-interaction.pdf

Whiteboard

I would like to stress that it's in our best interest to keep this as simple as possible. I think simple browsing and opening of files is a good idea, but I would like to stay away from reimplementing nautilus. Pending completion of the gridview widget, I can easily hook up all of the GIO code to browse and open files & folders. - Chris S.

I agree with this. I think this should be used primarily to open files, so browsing into subdirectories and opening files should be sufficient. - Björn
