This has been implemented in the linked branch by using the same sign in method.

So it doesn't change current behaviour, the OPENID_ASSOCIATE_EXISTING setting must be set to True. After doing this, some text is added to the sign in page for authenticated users notifying them that entering an OpenID will link it to their account.
