The resolution for wide-screen monitors and laptops should be easier
The installer should see what monitor you have and choose the best resolution for it. If it's 16:9, choose a 16:9 resolution. If 16:10, the same. And not the 1024*768, which seems to be the default.
I have a laptop with a 1280*800 pixels (16:10) and can't set up the screen to get that resolution. The xorg.conf is fine, but if I go to System>

It looks like progress is being made on this, though not because of the specification.

Yeah, that's the new xorg driver ^_^
* 2007-08-17 bryce: The new -intel driver now incorporates 915resolution automatically which is available in Gutsy. Gutsy's xserver 1.3 has display hotplugging capability which should often make this "just work". We also are including a GUI xorg config tool DisplayConfigGtk for the (hopefully rare) situations where it doesn't configure correctly. Please test that the desired functionality now works properly, and if any changes are still needed, please elaborate these in the spec on the wiki page.
