Condensed interface mockup
I propose to move the checkbox directly by the side of "default" or "selected image", realign the path field, so that vertical space dedicated to the backgrounds increase. Unfortunately it is not possible to directly attach the mockup, so I will join an external link.

It's not feasible to move the checkboxes like that, because it confuses their purpose. The ultimate goal of devoting more space to the images, however, is a sensible one.
I've also been working on restructuring the UI, in order to simplify the layout and reduce duplication of information for images using the default settings. The result is a shorter controls section, which has allowed more vertical space (50% extra on startup) to be dedicated to the image list.
0.9.4 also introduces some code changes so there's still some testing to go, but the new UI should be available in the next 24 hours.
