Bug Description

shares-admin Lucid, Control Center > Shared Folders > "Sharing Services are not Installed", even though samba is indeed installed and functioning normally. Let me guess, shares-admin is checking for /etc/init.d/samba, which no longer exists in Lucid.

Bug #574046 appears to be a duplicate but has more info regarding the problem (i.e. SysV boot scripts).

On Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) with nfs-kernel-server installed "/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server" is present so shares-admin detects NFS support. Workaround for Samba: ln -s /etc/init.d/samba /etc/init.d/smbd

A small correction for the workaround posted by jhansonxi:

sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/smbd /etc/init.d/samba

/etc/init.d/smbd exists in Ubuntu 10.04, the missing file/link is /etc/init.d/samba

thanks a lot for the info!
