Bug Description

When I empty trash, the emptying dialog was appearing and hanging.

To stop the hang, I pressed the close icon. (X)

After "emptying", the trash icon didn't go to empty it stayed the full icon.

My hard drive ran out of room, but it didn't make sense.

I started looking into the situation and found ~/.local/Trash/files had about 10 GB of stuff in it. ~/.local/Trash/info was empty.

Trash wasn't emptying.

I did an su rm -rf of ~/.local/Trash/file, which cleaned out my trash.

This bug looks specific to kubuntu butmy trash hasn't worked properly since I upgraded to kde-3.4.3.

Guess not, according to the KDE bug report it's been fixed for a while. But sounds like the same problem:

I was running low on disk space, so I was cleaning up some files. I already did that about a week ago, but it turned out I freed up very little space. Turned out several folders were still in ~/.local/Trash/file, I had to run sudo rm -rf to delete them. Without sudo, they wouldn't get deleted so I guess for some reason I wasn't the owner. I am pretty sure I didn't get any error messages when trashing them in the first place or emptying the trash.

Happened again. Trash said it was empty, but there was a bunch of stuff in ~/.local/Trash/files. Deleting the files with konqueror puts them right back, and makes the trash can full. Emptying it has no effect on the files.

To permenately delete a file, select it and then press shift-delete. Instead of making sure you want to move it to the trash, it asks if you would like to delete it.

can you run:

ls -la ~/.local/share/Trash/files

and either paste the result, or tell us what the permissions on those files and directories are?

ie, it should look something like:
-rw------- 1 sarah sarah 160 2006-09-03 20:55 away.log

Sorry, I'm very impatient indeed. I always waited ~45 seconds with no progress, but it seems after about 2 minutes the dialog dissapears and it sends the file to the trash directory at which point it turns into bug 60167. Sorry to waste time.

To answer the permissions question, the permissions seem normal:
-rw-r--r-- 1 sumguy231 sumguy231 2 2006-09-13 15:27 test.txt
I also noticed: for me, if I leave the dialog for a while, the trash eventually does empty, but the dialog never progresses or closes. The hang when sending to the trash happens only half the time. When this happens, the trash apepars full but hangs on emptying. The other time, the progress dialog doesn't appear or hang and the file gets sent to the trash directory, but the icon and count remains at empty and the emptying progress dialog hangs. Both times, I have the hang in emptying that the first post describes. Sorry if the description isn't very clear.

Hmm, Interesting story about that. After a reboot yesterday, (accompanied by a kernel patch and KOffice update, though that probably didn't have anything to do with it) it suddenly works fine again. I'll see if it comes back, but nothing so far.

I had this issue with kubuntu feisty. I deleted some files (put them in the trash) and then i tried to flush the trash can. It wouldn't flush or delete any files. This was because i had put a directory with a svn tree in it, where i compiled a program with root rights. So, because of some files with higher rights, flushing was impossible. I did not try it with gutsy yet.

Progress dialogue not doing anything so I have to delete the trash from the command line. Don't think there's any issues with differing privileges.

So that means that bug #60167 is also fixed, right?

Has someone actually tested that to make sure that it's true, or is it
an untested assumption?

I think I am having the same issue with Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. I noticed my root disk usage doubled in size and when i found the .local/trash folder full of garbage, I searched and found this post. It might just be a coincident, but I had just started using gksudo to launch a nautilis file browser with root privilegdes so I could move songs files into the pydance folder under /usr/share/games/... before I noticed this problem. It may just be I wasn't placing or deleting any files into the root until then.

Once I realized that crowding my root with all those song files was a bad idea, I tried to add a PATH to my /home/bin and then moved all the files there and then deleted them off the root. The disk space didn't decrease until I went back and shift-deleted the contents in the /root/.local/trash

Hope this helps, I am a complete newb, so I am just pushing keys here

kio_trash author here.
Anyone still having this bug in hardy, please give as many details as possible.
Is ~/.local/share/Trash/info empty? (Most descriptions says it is, but let's start from there). If not, who owns the files?
Who owns the leftover files and directories in ~/.local/share/Trash/files? For directories, anything inside that is not owned by the current user? It's impossible to delete a root-owned directory that contains root-owned files, that's part of the issue.

If this is not about root-owned files or directories, then I'm suspecting a bug in kio_trash when used from two windows at the same time, possibly.

The best place to answer would be in the new KDE bug report http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167051 btw.

I find something to delete and then I'm able to empty the trash.
I also manually remove the /.local/share/Trash manually from time to time.

Don't know if this helps, but the problem for me seems to be restricted to the Dolphin file manager.
I can shift + del files, but when I try to move them to trash I get the following:

"Could not write to file ~/.local/share/Trash/info/filename.trashinfo."

Or:

"The trash has reached its maximum size! Cleanup the trash manually."

However, using the Thunar file manager, there seems to be no problem with moving the files to trash and then emptying trash.

GodXera (godxera) wrote :

Another note of interest is that the trash bin has disappeared from my desktop panel/folder and trying to add the directory manually gives the following:

"A folder named ~/.local/share/Trash already exists."

If this is true, why is it not showing?

BTW this bug also occurred for me while deleting from a full HDD.

GodXera: your bug is a bit different. The report here was about "empty trash" not emptying it, while you are getting actual error messages.

What's the problem with ~/.local/share/Trash/info/ ? Can you go into this directory? Does it belong to your user? Can you manually create a "filename.trashinfo" in that directory (and then delete it to avoid confusing kio_trash)?

It would be useful for me to see the output of this command:
  cd ~/.local/share/Trash
  ls -lR > /tmp/trash.txt
(and then send me the file /tmp/trash.txt)

This should probably be reported on KDE bugzilla, especially since it's unrelated to the rest of this report.

GodXera: i recently(just now) had the same problem with my new kubuntu 11.10 installation.
When trying to delete an item I got the message:

"The trash has reached its maximum size! Cleanup the trash manually."

and after deleting the folders

                                             ~/.local/share/Trash/
and
                                             ~/.local/share/Trash/info

I ended up with the error message:

"Could not write to file ~/.local/share/Trash/info/filename.trashinfo."

After I have read your post I tried using Thunar too and that worked.

By accident I discovered that when you open the trash with Konqueror and rightclick where the deleted items normally would be you get access to a menu "Configure Trash Bin".
There I changed some settings and afterwards I was able to delete files with Dolphin and Konqueror again.

Hendy Irawan (ceefour) wrote :

@MicroPor:

You shouldn't need to delete entire ~/.local/share/Trash, but only ~/.local/share/Trash/metadata file.

But in can you already deleted ~/.local/share/Trash, you can make it work again by Dolphin > Settings > Trash > tweak the setting and back again so you can click OK. Now Trash should work again.
