Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

In Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe 5, Firefox 2 can manage links like "apt://name_of_the_pakage"
I tried to create such a link in OOo Writer, to export the document in PDF and to read it with Evince but Evince didn't recognize the command.

Thank you for your bug. That looks like a firefox thing and is not supposed to work in evince, that's not a bug

Thank you for your answer

Shall i fill another bug report for Pidgin since Pidgin handles (html)
links like Firefox and Evince ?
It would be great (and more coherent for the user) if these softwares
(which are bundle with ubuntu) could all benefit from apturl and react
in the same way

You could open tasks on this bug but I don't like this "install packages in on click" idea since that somewhat encourages users to install random packages from the net which usually is not recommended and tends to create issues

The drawback is that people will use their passwords more frequently
and then it will become less exceptionnel in their mind which is not a
good thing for security.
But it's still better than gdebi if you consider that packages are
installed from official repositories...
Je m'occupe donc de remplir un rapport de bug similaire pour Pidgin,
par souci de cohérence et pour homogénéiser l'expérience utilisateur
;-)

No need to open other bugs, you can open different tasks on this one

you want to open a bug on the Ubuntu project and on the pidgin package rather

Thanks for your patience (it was Ubuntu distribution and pidgin package !)

As i said, since apturl works with links in Firefox 2 for Gutsy, i think it should also work with other softwares which are able to handle links : Evince with PDF files and Pidgin.

Both Firefox, Evince and Pidgin are bundle with Ubuntu, that's why it would make sense to unify their behaviour.

And again, many Thanks for your patience

Finally, i've deleted pidgin from that bug report.

After thinking, it appears that HTML and PDF docs are often used to show documentation, therefore apturl is important whith them
whereas pidgin stand for something more instanteneous and apturl is probably useless with it

BTW, anything new concerning apturl in Evince ?
