Bug Description

Totem as of 3.12 has an entirely new UI based heavily on GNOME3 HIG. We would like to ship this for Ubuntu GNOME, however I suspect that Ubuntu and the other flavours that ship totem, probably won't want these changes. If that is the case, then we might need to fork the packaging and upload a new source package totem3 or something.

Thanks. The screenshot is the start screen, right? It seems similar to evince "most recent" welcome screen. What's the UI if you run it on a video?

Neat, I played with this a bit but didn't get that far, happy to leave the work to you. :)

I guess there are a few issues here - here are my thoughts on them.

  - Seems to hard depend on grilo's tracker plugin. I removed the package dependency and it didn't work very well; couldn't add local media. I think it might be *good* to use the rest of the plugins, but as we've been shying away from tracker, this part ought to still be optional for us.
  - Haven't seen this myself because my system is trackerified, but we'll need to think about the initial UI in that case. grl-filesystem? too slow? Is there an 'empty' UI which helps you add local media using a file chooser?
  - Would probably be good to add traditional menus back, like Evince has done.

I am going to take a look at the menu situation, suppose I can also look at the grilo tracker stuff while I am there.

grilo itself is a hard dependency, and grilo-plugins will need an MIR, since nothing will work without that. tracker use itself could be made
to fall back to grl-filesystem , but it needs gsettings config "org.gnome.Totem filesystem-paths" probably set to users home directory.

The video tab that is shown at startup will show media from tracker, optical media and bookmarks ( set via "add local video" dialog). In my
quick hack to make this use grl-filesystem, it will show media from the filesystem-paths key above, but this is not recursive.
Bookmarks don't currently get thumbnails, but there are git patches to fix that.

I uploaded an updated totem to gnome3-staging. grilo stuff should be sorted now, just needs MIR for grilo-plugins bug #1394731. I added a titlebar patch though its incomplete at the moment, window controls end up back in the toolbar after playing a video.

There are some theme issues with the search-bar and popovers (unreadable fonts etc) using ubuntu gtk theme.

Most of the menu items only make sense in the player UI, what do you want to do in the Browse UI?

I hope you will soon.

Current totem is horrid, feels like a software for total illiterates. Everything feels so crippled: no more split screen w/playlist, only most basic preferences and - worse - no menu bar at all.

And 3.15.x doesn't even start here on Vivid, but just segfaults. (See other bug.)

3.14.x with menu bar patch is on gnome3 ppa now (instead of gnome3-staging), that is what will end up in vivid. The menubar will only apply on !GNOME desktops.
Not sure any preferences were removed they were just most around with the new UI,
