Bug Description

elementary should have some kind of global transfers indicator which would show the sending and receiving of data. The most common use case would be quick access to Downloads without having to open the app (like Midori or Transmission). But it could also show things like Seeding information or sending a file through tubes.

Exporting process progress to an indicator was implemented a while ago; there was a spec for it, an indicator implementation and I think branches of Nautilus and Brasero supporting it. I used to think it's a good idea but now I think it's better to use progressbars in the dock.

As for a central location to view and manage downloads, I'm all for it, here's the blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/elementaryos/+spec/downloader-service

That should be shown in the progress bar on the dock icon for sure.

I've made a couple of dirty mockups, if they can help to something:

i can also make a 3rd one, only for files-related transfers.

This should be a thing. It would advantageously replace individual icons for Steadyflow and transmission, Midori not showing progress by default, etc. It would also mean Ubuntu One would move from the IM indicator (where it doesn't belong at all) to here.

It showing local data transfer would be great in my opinion but should probably be discussed further.

Ubuntu and their new sync menu almost had it right but they forgot an indicator should indicate instead of being a submenu for advertisement. Also their stubborn refusal to add any other kind of data movement than cloud services means we are bound to ultimately have two icons for file movement.
