The CNS workstations are idle most of the time. With the right infrastructure, these free cycles could be put to use in an ad-hoc cluster. While the interconnect bandwidth and latency are likely too poor for many tasks, jobs of the embarrassingly parallel sort would become much easier. OpenMPI (for SCV compatibility) and MapReduce/Hadoop (for easy development) are two possible implementation options.
