provide a size-sorted tree for selecting excluded files and folders
This blueprint is about
. reducing the effort for the user to choose files and folders for exclusion
- reducing the size of backups
- reducing time consumption during backups
In the Settings / Exclude panel, I imagine a fourth button "tree size". Clicking on it, something similar to this appears:
Toplevel nodes of that tree are the include pathes. The tree contains both folders and files sorted by size (see picture). Files and folders that are already in the exclude list are not shown in that tree. Using such a tree view, it is easy for the user to select space hogs for exclusion.
Use case 1: Since the last backup I temporarily put a large file on my desktop. Using the "tree size" button, I can quickly drill down to that space hog and exclude it from being backed up.
Use case 2: Using SVN, I checked out a project just for some experiments. Using the "tree size" button, I can quickly exclude that folder even if I forgot it was still there.
A "move file/folder to trash"-button in the treesize view would let backing up and cleaning go hand in hand.
After all, the "exclude" feature is there because we don't want to waste hard disk space and backup time. Such a treesize view works perfectly into that direction.
