Analyze and optimize I/O patterns

Analyze the I/O pattern for various scenarios, including benchmarks and data loading.

Persistit now has an optional I/O logging facility. The blueprint involves developing some modified policies around page replacement and read-ahead, and then testing those policies against the I/O log. I like this task as in introduction to some serious programming and some serious intellectual effort because it would not require deep knowledge of the code base. I think this might be a great learning project
